Belief vs. Truth

mms-1-23-2017This is the truth:

  • I had a scrambled egg, ½ a piece of toast, and handful of strawberries for breakfast today.
  • 2 + 2 = 4
  • The War of 1812 happened.
  • The height of Mt. Everest is 29,029 ft.
  • The temperature at the North Pole is below freezing right now.
  • The number of people who attended my last workshop was 19.

Objective truths are true whether we believe them or not. These truths have hard evidence as proof. The outcome would not change based on our belief.

Subjective truths are only true because we believe they are. We simply decide they are true, and that decision changes the outcome:

  • This beer tastes better than that one.
  • This music is irritating.
  • Calculus is hard.
  • That movie was boring.
  • The comment was offensive.

These are not provable facts and certainly not universally held. But they often feel like truth to us. It is highly likely that if you decide to have a good day at work, you will. There is a raft of research to support that taking a placebo pill often makes people actually feel better. Belief is a powerful thing and often underutilized as a tool to manage the quality of our lives.

It is true that Donald Trump is President. It is true that the buying habits of most Americans has drastically changed. It is true that millennials have entered the workplace. These solid, provable facts are true, and they are also neutral… until our beliefs about them give them meaning. And if we can attach one meaning to them, just remember we could also decide to attach a different one. That shift in belief relative to the actual truth is what creates our experience and our reality. We cannot change truth, but we hold all of the power concerning what we believe about it… which ultimately could change, improve, or enhance our outcomes.

“Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or that could literally destroy their lives.”
~Tony Robbins
