Last week, I heard a powerful question that has been swimming around in my head ever since: “Is this the highest and best use of my time and, if not, how can I do it for the last time?”
Case in point: Anna and Maria come to my house every other Friday to clean. It’s such a help to have them deep-clean the kitchen, guest rooms, baths, and properly scrub the shower as I often don’t have time to get to them with my work schedule. But Tom wonders… why do I always clean before they come?
Let’s be clear. I don’t actually clean but I do tidy up quite a bit. It occurred to me that the reason I do this is not because I’m embarrassed that Anna and Marie will see a messy house (I’m pretty neat most of the time) but rather that I don’t think they would put certain things away in the right spot or change sheets, make beds, or fold towels the way I like them done. And it just seemed like too much trouble to explain it all.
It is definitely not the highest and best use of my time but because I don’t ask, “How can I do it for the last time?” I continue to spend between two to four hours each month which could be spent on several other important projects just to “get ready” for the housekeepers. Avoiding the time to communicate what I need has been costing me a lot of time and money.
So, I’ve made a list of six things they can do for me (or do differently), and I plan to discuss the list with them on Friday. I have zero doubt that they will be more than glad to incorporate these changes into their routine… freeing me to move on to my long list of fun and lucrative ideas.
The quality of our answers is based on the quality of our questions. This week, ask some quality questions of yourself… particularly this one: Is this the highest and best use of my time and, if not, how can I do it for the very last time?
